From Rowing on Water to Rowing at Home: The WaterRower NOHRD Story
The WaterRower story began in 1988 with John Duke, a Yale University engineer and aspiring member of the US National Rowing Team. Inspired by the smooth feel and rhythmic power of rowing on water, Duke set out to create a rowing machine that could replicate this experience indoors.
The result? The WaterRower. This innovative design featured a water tank that provided natural resistance, mimicking the feel of rowing a boat. But Duke’s vision extended beyond functionality. He wanted to create a piece of “fitness furniture” that seamlessly integrated into living spaces. Drawing inspiration from the clean lines of Shaker furniture, the WaterRower offered both beauty and practicality.
The success of the WaterRower led to the birth of NOHRD in 2008. Named after the town of Nohrdhorn in Germany where WaterRower production is based, NOHRD aimed to expand upon the original concept. This sister brand focused on developing a range of cardio, strength, and wellness equipment that shared the same design principles as the WaterRower.
Today, WaterRower and NOHRD remain committed to John Duke’s original vision. They continue to develop innovative and beautifully crafted fitness equipment that allows people to experience the physical and aesthetic benefits of rowing and other exercises in the comfort of their own homes.
