Merrithew: A Pilates Legacy Built on Education and Innovation
The Merrithew story begins with Kathyrn Granta (now known as Kathryn Lowe Granta), a dancer and fitness instructor captivated by the practice of Pilates in the 1980s. Inspired by Joseph Pilates’ teachings, she embarked on a mission to share the benefits of this unique exercise method with the world.

In 1988, Kathyrn founded Stott Pilates, originally named “The Pilates Centre.” This Toronto-based studio became a hub for Pilates education, offering comprehensive training programs for instructors. Kathyrn, along with her husband Lindsay Merrithew, meticulously documented and refined Joseph Pilates’ original exercises, ensuring their safe and effective application in a modern context.

Merrithew, the equipment arm of the company, was established in 1990. Recognizing the importance of specialized equipment for optimal Pilates practice, they began designing and manufacturing reformers, chairs, and other apparatus. Merrithew reformers, known for their smooth operation and user-friendly features, became a popular choice for studios and home users alike.

Over the years, Merrithew (now Stott Pilates) has grown into a global leader in Pilates education and equipment. They continue to develop innovative programming and equipment designs, while upholding the core principles established by Joseph Pilates.
